DOOH is a powerful voice in the transition to a low carbon energy future

June was a significant and busy month at Ocean Outdoor, especially when it comes to our sustainability strategy.

Every year, we mark World Ocean Day with inspiring talks from both internal and external speakers, alongside opportunities for staff to volunteer. This year, we welcomed three speakers from Watts Sustainability and the London Wildlife Trust, who shared their expertise and insights. For our volunteering activity, Team Ocean joined the London Wildlife Trust at Sydenham Hill Wood, one of our Drops in the Ocean charity partners this year, to help clear debris from the woodland edge and prepare the area for new fencing, supporting the ongoing conservation of this important green space.

June 2026 also marked London Climate Action Week, with its first weeklong programme of industry sessions hosted by the global action initiative Ad Net Zero. The Ocean session focused on business resilience and featured speakers from the sustainability platform Pinwheel and non-profit Coralive, as well as Ocean team members.

The presentation and subsequent roundtable discussion explored how innovation is transforming Out of Home (OOH) advertising, highlighting best practices for reducing environmental impact as well as Ocean’s priorities shaping the next phase of progress. The group discussed ways to future proof your business from a sustainability perspective and shared examples of tangible real-world impact.

Our speakers then presented the Out of Home industry’s first climate-linked revenue model, launched in 2024 in partnership with Pinwheel. Alongside this, we heard from Ahmad Allahgholi (Aki), Founder and Director of Coralive – a credible example of real world impact. This marine project within Ocean’s Pinwheel partnership focuses on the restoration and management of coastal ecosystems globally.

The UK Business Green Awards took place that same week, to align with London Climate Action Week. The Ocean team was delighted to receive a ‘Highly Commended’ for Net Zero Strategy of the Year, alongside Aviva. The winner of the category was Haleon.

Our UK operations and technology director John Kilfeather said: “Ocean sits in a genuinely interesting place in the sustainability world. Our screens carry messages that can shift how millions of people think and behave. But the screens themselves, the energy, supply chain, infrastructure, all of that has a carbon footprint. This dual responsibility is what makes our industry not just an active participant in the low-carbon transition, but one of its most visible, powerful voices.”

John is leading the taskforce to meet science-based decarbonisation targets which mitigate the impact of the business as it continues to grow. Ocean’s aim is to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain by 2040. To advance its position:

  • In the UK and Netherlands markets, Ocean screens are now powered by 100% renewable electricity where Ocean controls the energy, leading to an over 80% reduction in market-based Scope 2 emissions since 2022
  • Nineteen advertising locations across the UK have now been rewilded to protect native species and encourage wildlife to return
  • Donated more than £8.9million in screen space to 31 environmental based charities in the last four years through the Drops in the Ocean programme

Going forward, Ocean will implement regional sustainability KPIs with a focus on key suppliers, green energy and travel to further eliminate carbon hotspots, aligning with the new Global Media Sustainability Framework for reporting standards for calculating campaign emissions.
