Design students harness Ocean Labs gaming technology to answer Lloyds DOOH brief

Lancaster University student Naya Cooper has won Ocean Outdoor UK’s inaugural student prize.  ‘Luckily there’s Lloyds’ is an entertaining Out of Home campaign designed to help students overcome everyday trials with the help of Lloyds.

Her winning idea was voted for by a live audience of agencies, brands and creative leaders at Ocean’s annual creative summit and Digital Creative Competition awards at One Marylebone in London.

Working to a brief set by Ocean and Lloyds, students were asked to turn money management into something their peers might want to engage with through relatable campaigns which use the creative freedom of Out of Home.

Naya’s idea draws on some of the realities of student life – messy roommates, annoying landlords, empty fridges  – to align with Lloyds’ problem solving student account perks. Her interactive campaign celebrates everyday chaotic moments by inviting students to submit their own photos to DOOH screens, viewers then voting for the best pictures to win a series of prizes.

Announcing the winner, Drew Satchell, Lloyds marketing manager, said: “Our entrants showed how well they understand the audience, their concepts really leaning into technology to bring their creative ideas to life. All the entries were both engaging and full of personality.”

Ocean Outdoor UK CEO Nick Shaw said: “OOH is the perfect environment for ideas that make us laugh, curious, or something to share with a friend. Our challenge was to produce a memorable, relatable idea that students will stop and engage with, and Naya has more than met the brief.”

Naya (20), a fine art and design student who is from London, wins a creative workshop with Ocean and Lloyds and a two week internship with Ocean Labs.

The other three shortlisted contenders were:

The Lloyds Gallop

Created by Grace Rickard, Mihir Rohatgi and Devanshi Garg, marketing students from the National Film and Television School, the trio collaborated on an interactive game using Ocean Play technology. Participants use their hands to mimic a horse rider, racing Lloyds’ famous black horse through familiar University settings to win a series of financial incentives. A leaderboard and QR code help to engage and entice new student account customers.

Level Up

Brand designer Ben Powell who is studying with the School of Communication Arts, created Level Up, an interactive arcade style DOOH game. Players use their arms as paddles to knock away falling expenses to keep their bank balance in the green. Those who successfully complete the 60 second game secure the ultimate prize – a 0% overdraft. Scores feed into a live Universities leaderboard turning individual games into a national competition.

Meet Your Future Self

University of Leeds student Anna Belbin-McCaul used Ocean React technology to combat financial anxiety, creating a lifelike 3D digital twin as a bridge between today’s choices and tomorrow’s potential. Gesture control technology allows participants to swipe left and right across the OOH screen, connecting the user to Lloyds’ practical banking tools and student offers. Users can share their twin with friends and sign up directly to a student account.
