Ocean has reaffirmed its mission to help deliver a net zero economy, supported by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) which has validated Ocean’s climate targets to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The SBTi has approved Ocean’s near-term science based emissions reduction target which will see Ocean will reduce its carbon emissions by 42% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2040.
Joining the SBTi ensures that Ocean’s climate action work is in line with the latest science. Taken with the company’s ISO14001 certification, it demonstrates Ocean’s commitment to actively participate in the fight against climate change by adopting eco-responsible practices and promoting science-based sustainable innovation across the business.
The SBTi has enabled more than 11,000 companies worldwide to set science-based targets. The climate action organisation was originally established by CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and as one of the We Mean Business Coalition commitments.
John Kilfeather, Ocean’s director of operations and technology, said: “Having our carbon reduction targets validated by the SBTi demonstrates that they are both science-based and robust. Going into 2026, we will continue to engage with our landlords, clients and partners, supporting them in driving down emissions, keep building on the advancement of new DOOH technologies and sustainable systems of the future, and find other ways to play our part in the transition.”
Detailed targets:
Scope 1 covers emissions from sources that Ocean either owns or controls directly, including companywide facilities. At 2% of total emissions, Scope 1 represents the company’s lowest share of emissions.

Under Scope 2, Ocean has reduced emissions across its owned DOOH estate. Since 2019, all electricity sourced by Ocean is from sustainable suppliers. In 2024, the company upgraded the LEDs on the BFI IMAX, reducing energy usage by 30%. As of April 2022, none of Ocean screens, apart from Landsec’s Piccadilly Lights, operate on a 24 hour basis.

With regards to Scope 3 targets, Ocean is collaborating with its supply chain and has adjusted its procurement plan to effectively source sustainable materials, as well as measuring employee travel. This has resulted in:
- Purchased goods and services being reduced by 27%
- Employee commuting being reduced by 50%
