Ocean Outdoor marks the 55th anniversary of Earth Day

Across our UK network, this year we are marking the 55th anniversary of Earth Day with a national campaign which carries the environmental movement’s Our Power, Our Planet global message across 61 UK roadside and city centre screens.

Messages will appear throughout the day in eight cities, supporting Earth Day’s 2025 positive action campaign to unite behind renewable energy, tripling the global generation of clean electricity by 2030.

Every screen involved is 100% powered by renewable sources every day of the year.

In London, the public is invited to the unveiling of an Apollo 8 Earthrise Sea and Space mosaic on Piccadilly Lights, featuring children’s artwork depicting what our ocean planet means to them. The screen space is donated by Landsec. Presented by Space for a Better World, the 7pm domination forms part of a three day sea and space art immersive exhibition hosted by Landsec’s Piccadilly Lights Venue.

This year, as part of our Drops in the Ocean programme, we are also giving media space to Canal & River Trust. The brand awareness campaign features the wildlife that can be seen on the 2,000 miles of UK waterways the charity works to protect. By showcasing their work, we hope to demonstrate the power of collective action and inspire others to join the fight for a more sustainable future.

In our London office, we invited Born Free, another one of our Drops in the Ocean charities in to do a knowledge session. Born Free are an international wildlife charity who rescue and protect wild animals from exploitation.

On the first ever Earth Day in 1970, 20 million Americans marched for change, their collective action forming the world’s biggest environmental movement. Today, Earth Day says it mobilises more than one billion people annually to champion the health of the planet and its people, inviting individuals, local communities, governments, faith leaders, civil society, educators and the media to unite behind Earth Action Day.
