Ocean Outdoor in Nepal: supporting Pipal Tree’s mission

In October 2024, part of our Ocean team embarked on an inspiring journey to Nepal to witness the impactful work of Pipal Tree, a charity dedicated to transforming marginalised rural communities. As one of the first charities supported through our Drops in the Ocean initiative in 2022—where we donate 2% of our annual revenue in advertising space—Pipal Tree continues to make significant strides in addressing Nepal’s most pressing challenges.

Pipal Tree’s mission: responding to crisis

Pipal Tree is committed to tackling three interconnected global crises that profoundly affect Nepal:

  • Climate change – Nepal ranks as the tenth most affected country in the world due to climate change, facing increasing threats from extreme weather events
  • Biodiversity loss – This ecological hotspot is rapidly degrading due to habitat destruction and intensified wildfires exacerbated by climate change
  • Poverty and inequality – With one-fifth of Nepal’s population living below the poverty line, marginalised groups such as low-caste communities, ethnic minorities and women face severe disadvantages in education, health and economic opportunities.

Recognising these urgent issues, Pipal Tree has positioned itself as an organisation responding to crisis, implementing sustainable and community-driven solutions.

Climate resilience in Janakpur: revitalising communities

Our journey began in Janakpur, where we observed Pipal Tree’s collaborative efforts with Mithila Wildlife Trust in the Kamala River Basin. The region has suffered from devastating floods, including a catastrophic event in 2004 that claimed over 800 lives. Since then, displaced communities have struggled with extreme poverty and lack of access to education.

Pipal Tree first became involved in 2020, providing emergency food relief during the COVID-19 lockdown. Recognising the deeper systemic issues, they established two Community Learning Centres (CLCs) to offer non-formal education and an entry point into mainstream schooling. These centres empower children from the lowest castes to gain confidence and pursue formal education. College students from similar backgrounds serve as tutors, creating a cycle of opportunity where both students and tutors benefit.

In addition to education, Pipal Tree is addressing environmental challenges through the Miyawaki Method of reforestation, which accelerates tree growth, increases biodiversity, and strengthens flood defences. We visited three reforestation sites along the Kamala River, where newly planted trees are helping to create dense forests that not only restore nature but also protect communities from future flooding.

Urban rewilding in Kathmandu: a greener future

Our journey continued to Kathmandu, where we met with Lily Katuwal, the founder of Lily’s Leaves, a local initiative dedicated to environmental restoration. Since July 2023, Lily’s Leaves has been leading urban rewilding efforts by transforming neglected public land into vibrant Miyawaki forests.

The first site, covering 1000 sqm and housing 2500 plants, was established in 2023 and has already flourished. The second site, just four months old, is home to 2000 saplings, while a third site, only one month old at the time of our visit, has introduced another 2000 trees.

Kathmandu, suffering from severe air pollution and rapid urbanisation, has one of the world’s highest rates of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. By restoring urban greenery, these projects not only improve air quality but also create vital ecosystems for local wildlife and provide cleaner, healthier spaces for city residents.
