Ocean welcomes back Team GB medalists

It’s been fantastic to watch Team GB competing at the Winter Olympics over the last couple of weeks, with some great action across all of the sporting events. As a Team GB and Discovery + partner, we were also able to share Winter Olympics highlights on many of our screens up and down the country, to make sure no one missed the action whilst they were out and about.

Due to being a gold partner and the only out-of-home media partner to Team GB and Paralympics GB, Ocean Outdoor offered to play host to a ‘welcome back’ drinks reception and Q&A for the winning curling teams, hosted by previous Winter Olympics medallist Aimee Fuller.

The action from Beijing kept us glued to our screens this February. Jen Dodds and Bruce Mouat got Team GB off to a great start in the first week in the mixed doubles curling, getting through to the semi-finals and just missing out on the medal places. There were also some great performances from the men’s four-man bobsleigh team who took an amazing 6th place. In the freestyle skiing Kirsty Muir just escaped the medals in 5th place in the ‘big air’ category and 8th in ‘slopestyle’, closely followed by Katie Summerhayes in 9th place for ‘slopestyle’. In snowboarding Team GB also just missed out, with 6th place in both the men’s and women’s snowboard cross.

In the final weekend of sport, Eve Muirhead MBE won gold and Bruce Mouat won silver for Team GB, with their skips helping them into the medal positions. These medal clinching positions meant that Eve Muirhead now boasts 13 Olympic gold medals.

In an unusual Winter Olympics, where Covid-19 kept large audiences at bay, the athletes did a fantastic job at staying focused on the job at hand and putting their all into these games. We were honoured to welcome the medalists, just one day after they arrived back from Beijing.

Welcoming our Winter Olympics stars, this was a great chance to find out not only their experiences out in Beijing, but also understand what drives these athletes and how they are where they are today.

Eve Muirhead MBE said, “I wanted to look at it as if it was my first Olympics so I could really take in the experience with the girls (her skips) and really take the opportunity with both hands. To be able to open the ceremony (as flagbearer) and then to land home with a gold medal, it’s been like a fairytale.”

Bruce Mouat said, “After we missed out on the medals for the doubles curling, I didn’t want the defeat that me and Jen (Dodds) had to impact the chances that this team had. I had to put it behind me and keep morale high for this team and we were so glad of the outcome.”

Kevin Henry, head of content and sponsorship at Ocean Outdoor, said, “It was fantastic to be able to experience some of the Winter Olympics buzz for ourselves and to hear from such an inspirational bunch of athletes. We can’t wait for many other events in collaboration with our partners at Team GB.”

What an inspirational experience to host these athletes and we can’t wait until the start of the Winter Paralympics which start next week. Find out more about our partnership with Paralympics GB and which of our screens you will be able to catch the Paralympic Winter Games on over the next couple of weeks.
