Ocean spotlights International Women’s Day

This year, we are spotlighting women across the UK in a powerful celebration of diverse thought and achievement, presented at Frameless in London.

Hosted by our Head of Marketing, Jennifer Bell, and a team of colleagues, we were joined by an impressive line up of in-person and virtual speakers who inspired and encouraged us all throughout the day.

Starting the day, Jessica Jacobs, marketing and brand partnerships at the National Gallery educated the room on pioneering women in art, looking at historical pieces including The Ugly Duchess and the Execution of Lady Jane Grey. Afterwards, confidence coach, Anna Manning, led a workshop that focused on building and rediscovering confidence and recognising our ‘inner’ boss.

Our International Women’s Day celebration concluded with an honest and open panel discussion which discussed the role of women in sport and business, highlighting the ongoing efforts needed for progress in women’s sports and how far we have come already in the UK. Joining the panel was Ocean UK CEO, Phil Hall, Aimee Bywater-Lutman, Head of Business Operations at Women’s Rugby World Cup, Jenny Seymour, Commercial Director at British Paralympic Association, and Katy Wright, CEO at FCB London.

Inspiring words of advice came from Melissa Bethell, Edwina Dunn OBE, Cordelia Linacre-Brown, Nicole Lonsdale, Pia Petersen, Gayle Noah, Sarah Parkes, Jennie Roper and Claire Wright, who each recorded a short video piece to camera in response to the question “What is the most impactful advice you have received on your journey?”

Here are some of the one-liners that we took away:

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take” – Cordelia Linacre-Brown

“The feedback you receive is a gift” – Melissa Bethell

“Don’t worry about what has past, look forward and believe in what you are doing”
– Edwina Dunn

“You’re never going to meet anybody sitting at home. Get out there and meet people” – Sarah Parkes

“Don’t be afraid to be yourself. Not everything has a traditional path” – Gayle Noah

“Do not have any limitations. Think everything is possible” – Pia Peterson

“Don’t dwell on what you can’t do. Focus on what you can do” – Nicola Lonsdale

“Be true to yourself and be happy in the skin that you’re in” – Jennie Roper

“Don’t sweat the small stuff” – Claire Wright

Across our network, Printworks led a digital art installation on SkyLights, honouring the women of Manchester. Europe’s largest digital ceiling lit up with inspiring portraits by Manchester artist Frances Heitzman. Revolt brought to life this year’s IWD theme for UN Women: ‘For ALL Women and Girls. Rights. Equality. Empowerment.’ with their “Oi!” bid to stop sexism campaign, focused on driving the conversation from awareness to action.

After the event we headed down to The Screen on Leicester Square, where each of our photos was displayed in a powerful collage for all to see.

A huge thank you to our incredible line up of in-person and virtual speakers who made the day possible.
