They bear the least blame for climate change, but suffer the worst.
The Children’s Fund’s report “Climate threat to children 2021” shows perhaps unexpected connections between natural disasters and increased sexual violence, child marriage and child labour. 503 million children live in areas at extreme risk of flooding and 34 million children live on the run. “There is a connection that is as clear as it is frightening,” says Martina Hibell, Secretary General, Children’s Fund.

“It is so incomprehensibly difficult to understand the consequence of the center of my hometown being covered by meters of water. It’s a shocking image to see what it would look like if it happened here too. We hope that this will activate more people to act to protect the vulnerable children. That more people will understand the connections.
And of course we hope that more people will become monthly donors via Barnfonden.se so that we get even better resources to build more resilient societies in the affected countries. It is also important that Sweden maintains our level of aid and ensures that the climate-related development work has a clear focus on children,”
